Is Transactional Leadership Your Culture Killer?

Transactional leadership is defined as a leadership style that relies on reward and punishment… and it’s a culture killer.

In other words, “You’ll be rewarded or punished based on my own criteria – and good luck trying to figure that out.” It’s not warm, friendly and doesn’t foster trust.  Most managers view this leadership style as fair and impartial, but don’t be surprised if this creates fear and lack of transparency in your team.

Do you feel your stoic, cold hearted leadership style is a feature and not a bug? Maybe..for just a moment, warm up to a different approach. Try these 3 things:

1. Show empathy. If someone on your team is going through something personal, big or small, show some grace and show up for them. If something’s “off”, try saying this… “Are you okay?” Too simple right? You might be surprised how much they open up.

Create the habitsay to yourself and repeat, “I’ll go first.” Your first move to connection will yield surprisingly awesome results.

2. Don’t lead with fear. Peter’s classic response with the Bob’s from Office Space comes to mind…”So that means that when I make a mistake, I have eight different people coming by to tell me about it. That’s my only real motivation is not to be hassled, that and the fear of losing my job. But you know, Bob, that will only make someone work just hard enough not to get fired.”

Try this instead – lead with your head AND your heart. Give your team tools to make magic happen and tell the story how their actions play into the BIG VISION of your org.  Let your team know what they do REALLY matters.  When they crush it, let the world know through rewards and recognition.  Go FULL SEND on celebrating their hard work and appreciate it… don’t let your ego get in the way and get passionate with them.  No one likes a boss who’s too cool.

3. Be a resource for them to grow. Especially with 1-on 1’s, use this opportunity to connect.  Don’t be afraid to ask about the outside of work stuff.  Connecting on a hobby or life event can lead to a bond that can yield value for both of you.  When your people feel safe and get real, you get the real story about what’s happening with your team.  Massive positive impact on your people creates genuine loyalty and willingness to go the extra mile.

Small change, big impact – Respond to your people with, “Tell me more.”  Tell me more commits engagement and enthusiasm. Do it.

We hope these ideas spur you to think beyond the way you’ve always done it. Nothing changes if nothing changes.
